What is A Shaman when is it "ok" to call yourself one?

The other day while having lunch with a friend, I was taken aback by a question that was posed to me. It wasn't the question per say that had me pause, but the implied suspicion. "How did you become a shaman, and how did you come upon this indigenous practice?'.
